Applying for APPTA Membership and Renewals
APPTA membership applications
APPTA wishes to advise that the next membership application cut-off date is the first week of every month . The membership committee reviews applications every month, excluding January. This is when the Volunteer Committee takes a well-deserved break. The membership committee has a large number of applications and renewals to process over the next couple of months, so there may be some delay in receiving your outcomes. We appreciate your patience.
This information will be upgraded monthly, giving new or upgraded members the appropriate time to place their applications before the next membership committee meeting.
Please note that the volunteer membership committee can only review so many applications per month, including upgrades, renewals, and new applications.
The membership committee would also appreciate it if you could please provide all the relevant membership criteria documents with your application to prevent delays.

APPTA wishes to advise on the following.
Nationally and internationally, our field is going from strength to strength. It is always important to ensure that we are being ethical and professional in ensuring all graduates continue to be of high standards.
We have a duty as an association to make sure that our practices adhere to the APPTA’s Clinical Competencies and Practice Standards for Play Therapy.
The APPTA is now trying to become a full member of Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA). This indicates that we must
Make sure we uphold our high standards in terms of membership by
- Ensuring that all future graduates considering the alternative pathway (those who are graduating after 2024) possess an undergraduate degree in mental health or allied health.
- Until further notice, all current students who have completed an APPTA-accredited course in play therapy are eligible for membership.
This material will be updated often to give new or upcoming graduates enough time to complete the requirements for membership.
Accredited Courses
APPTA Accreditation of First Master Degree in Play Therapy
APPTA has completed the first accreditation of an Australian masters degree in play therapy. APPTA is pleased to announce that the Master of Child Play Therapy at Deakin University has been successfully accredited. The accreditors were internationally recognised play therapists, Professor Linda Homeyer from the USA and Dr Virginia Ryan from the UK. Both of these accreditors had been involved in masters degrees in play therapy in North Texas and York, respectively.
We congratulate Deakin University.
APPTA
APPTA was established in 2007 and is the peak professional body for Play Therapists in Australia and throughout the Asia Pacific Region. It was formed in order to support ‘children’, parents, and professionals involved in the field of Play Therapy. It has now grown to include self-regulation, education and practice development. Our head office is located in Victoria, Australia. Our members provide Play Therapy and related services across public and private sectors in Australia, Asia and the South Pacific.
Whilst Play Therapy is now recognised Internationally, in this region it is still being established as a profession. Parents and Service Providers are becoming increasingly aware of the value of using Play Therapy for children, and are seeking further information about specific methods and access.
This website will provide information, resources and support for parents, professionals and Play Therapists. Our not-for-profit association is committed to providing the public with information and support for Play Therapy in an informative and helpful way.
On behalf of the association I wish to thank you for visiting our site.
